About

Rex LumberThe Beginning

After years spent handling, grading, sawing, and selling hardwoods in sawmills, Paul Forester Jr. founded the Rex Lumber Company in 1946 at a single rail siding in Somerville, Massachusetts. His years of experience had taught him that creating a successful business would require a commitment to customers, investing in employees’ futures, and actively supporting the general hardwood industry. Following these basic tenets, Rex Lumber Company has evolved into a full service wholesale distribution lumber yard. In addition to supplying rough lumber, Rex Lumber also offers a range of quality services including ripping, planing, gluing, precision cut-to-length, custom moulding, end-matching, dentil and embossing, priming, and finishing. Throughout the years, Rex Lumber has maintained the highest standards of quality and commitment to our customers’ needs.

Expansion andInnovation

From that humble rail siding in Somerville, Rex Lumber Company has been able to expand and innovate, providing opportunities for employees and additional services for our customers. In 1951, a yard with custom milling capabilities was opened in South Windsor, CT. A move to Cambridge in 1952 allowed us to control the quality of our kiln drying. Our New Jersey location began operation in 1971, with kilns. The need for space forced a move once again from Cambridge to Acton, MA in 1980. Following a steady plan of growth, Rex opened our yard in Doswell, VA in 1986. Our fleet of over 30 company owned trucks allows us to meet the delivery needs of our customers.

Rex Lumber Company was built on the enthusiasm of our employees and the quality of our work. Rex Lumber now employs over 200 people committed to the key principle of providing what our customers need. Our team of buyers travel the United States and the world, securing our current offerings and identifying new species that will fit your needs. Our salespeople, most of whom hold wood technology degrees, have extensive millwork training and an average of 17 years with the company. Our years of experience have taught us what it takes to produce custom millwork for even the most demanding customers. We take pride in our quality and integrity, and look forward to expanding our locations and offerings in the future.
